OTTAWA — The federal government has adopted new legislation that aims to prevent violence in federally regulated workplaces.

The legislation covers all forms of violence, including psychological harassment. It requires employers to develop policies and programs dealing with such issues as bullying, teasing and other harmful behaviour.

The regulations also require employers to assess their programs' effectiveness every three years and update them as necessary.

Coming nine years after an Ottawa Transpo employee shot and killed four co-workers, the measures also require all incidents of workplace violence to be recorded and investigated.

Le ministre fédéral du Travail Jean-Pierre BlackburnLabour Minister Jean-Pierre Blackburn says the message is "crystal clear:" Workplace violence will not be tolerated.

The Canadian Labour Congress has endorsed the violence-prevention measures, saying they are "the best and most comprehensive" in Canada.
