CAW members at CP Rail have ratified a new collective agreement by a strong 81 per cent. The agreement covers 2,500 workers in 22 locations across the country.

The new three-year agreement includes a 9.3 per cent wage increase for non-skilled trades workers and over 16 per cent for skilled trades. There are more than 1,800 skilled trades workers in the bargaining unit, represented by CAW Local 101.

The agreement also includes improvements in the areas of benefits, work rules and job security.

“There is little doubt that the strong strike mandate by the membership gave the bargaining committee the necessary clout to bring back the best possible agreement, even in the face of numerous employer demands for concessions,” said Tom Murphy, president of CAW Local 101.

The new agreement with CP Rail, reached late January, follows agreements reached with CN Rail and VIA Rail in January 2007 and July 2007 respectively. Workers voted on the tentative agreement in a series of meetings held across the country over the last two weeks.
