The CN Rail fire that cast smoke over the BCR Industrial Site Sunday prompted no health warnings and posed no safety threat, officials say.

Personnel from the environment ministry were on site Sunday afternoon as the CN locomotive burned, as was the Prince George Fire Department, and neither considered the incident significant.

"There was a malfunction during routine engine testing on Sunday afternoon," said CN Rail spokeswoman Kelli Svendsen. "The fire was at all times contained and the local fire department responded. The fire was extinguished shortly after and there were no injuries."

Svendsen said "there was no effect" to CN's operations at the rail yard. The only broad effect was the cloud of smoke that caused an unpleasant smell as far away as Red Rock, some witnesses said.
